Excerpts From The Appraisal Document

For completed details, contact Scott or Sharon Ferlingere via e-mail.

Media: A sculpture of an eagle created by combining a variety of natural materials. Vegetation predominates, including dyes, grasses, milkweed, willow, grape vines, and roots. Epoxy, metal nails, a copper band, and glass are also incorporated. The piece rests upon a pedestal which is set into a green granite base.

Description: The subject property is an amalgamation of willow, grapevines, sawdust, pampas grass, thistle, and milkweed. The hues of tan, and various shades of umber seen in the feathers were created by oil-based dyes applied to grasses. The light colored white down covering the head is created from milkweed. In addition to a naturalistic image of the Bald Eagle fashioned almost entirely from plant life, the artist employed metal nails, covered with epoxy and sculpting clay to form the talons and beak. A jalapeño pepper is used to represent the creature's tongue. Glass eyes stare intently at the viewer.

The Ferlingeres create their representations in a direct manner, disdaining slavish reliance upon photographs or detailed preliminary drawings with precise measurements. This allows them the freedom to capture the spirit of the animals which they are depicting.

Estimated Value: It is the appraisers considered opinion that the estimated value of the subject property is $5,000.00 to $6,000.00.

Appraiser's Note: "Numerous designations have been applied to a form of art which in recent years has gained acclaim. This art is referred to as outsider art...which lies outside of all the accepted definitions of types of art. It does, however, share certain intrinsic characteristics.

"The term, outsider art, was coined by Roger and is an appropriate reference to those visionaries creating works of art that are outside of the mainstream. Holger Cahill was one of the first scholars to write about this non-academic art. He offered the following statement in his commentary for The Newark Museum Exhibit Of American Folk Art Sculpture:
....folk art in its truest sense...is an expression of the common people and not an expression of a small cultured class. Folk art usually has not much to do with the fashionable art of the period. It is never the product of art movements, but comes out of craft traditions, plus that personal something of the rare craftsman who is an artist by nature if not by training. This art is based not on measurements or calculations but on feeling....It goes straight to the fundamentals of art --- rhythm, design, balance, proportion which the folk artist feels instinctively.
"this unique form of artistic endeavor has gained a wide audience in recent years as its endorsement of the fundamental values of human existence and the appreciation of innovative art forms have achieved acceptance."
